Approach to a comparative study between Vocabulario da lingoa de Japam (1603) and Vocabulario de Japón (1630)

The learning of Japanese by missionaries who arrived in Japan during the 16th and 17th centuries resulted in the publication of dictionaries and grammars that are not still well known today. Among them, the extensive Vocabulario da lingoa de Japam stands out, produced by members of the Society of Jesus and published in Nagasaki in 1603. A Spanish translation of this work, composed of more than thirty thousand entries, was published in Manila in 1630, attributed to the Basque Dominican Jacinto Esquivel and to the Japanese Jacobo Kyushei. The information from this translation, entitled Vocabulario de Japón, was taken by Léon Pagès in his Dictionnaire japonais-français (1868). The objectives of this article are to present the changes introduced in the Castilian version of the Vocabulario, considering both its macro and microstructure, to show its main differences regarding the original work, and to classify the observed modifications.
