Publication Guidelines

The Anuario de Estudios Filológicos, a journal edited by the University of Extremadura (Spain), publishes research papers written in Spanish, English, French, German, Italian and Portuguese (notwithstanding the fact that they may include quotes, references or examples in other languages), which deal with aspects of linguistic structure, literature of any language, general and applied linguistics and literary theory.

People wishing to contribute to the journal should send their manuscripts (sections «artículos» [articles], «notas y documentos» [notes and documents] y «reseñas» [book reviews]), strictly following the guidelines specified below, via the online submission and tracking system of Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Extremadura at: https://publicaciones.unex.es/index.php/AEF. Manuscripts may be submitted any time. However, only those received before April 20th will be peer-reviewed and published within the year (if the maximum of fifteen works has not been reached for the section of «articles» that the journal will publish by number). Articles under review elsewhere cannot be submitted to AEF. By the same token, articles under review in AEF cannot be submitted to other journals until the evaluation process has been completed. Finally, authors whose work gets published in AEF will not be allowed to submit another article to the journal in the following two numbers.

The manuscripts must be unpublished and original. The editorial board will first review each manuscript to see if it meets the basic requirements specified in the guidelines described below. Manuscripts that do not meet these requirements will not be sent out for further review. Submissions which meet the basic requirements are then sent out for blind peer review. The peer-review process will follow a double blind policy with two external referees, specialists in the corresponding area, or three if there are disagreements between the reports of the other two. Reviewers will belong to the advisory board, even though other externar specialists may also be asked to review articles. The editorial board will send the authors a report indicating the reviewers’ decision. These reports will contain several aspects for the evaluation of the paper such as presentation, structure, updating of the bibliography and of the content, interest of the theme and its scientific contribution and will assess the paper as either “accepted for publication”, “accepted with changes”, “resubmit for review”, “submit to another journal”, “rejected” or “see comments”. A paper must receive two favorable reports (“accepted for publication”) in order to be included in the journal. In the case of reports that assessed an article as “accepted with changes”, “resubmit for review” and “see comments”, the editorial board will decide whether new reports are required or if the manuscript is ready for publication. Following the external review, the editorial board will send the authors a reasoned notification of the decision of the reviewers within two months from the original submission. Correspondence will not be maintained with the authors once the rejection of the articles is notified.

Upon acceptance, authors will receive a file with the proofs of the article for correction. They will be requested to return the proofs within a time limit set by the journal editor. Accepted articles whose proofs are not returned on time will not be published.

Book reviews will be directly reviewed by the editorial board. The journal will only consider for publication reviews about books published within two years of the date of the submission.

 

  1. GENERAL FEATURES

1.1. It is the author’s responsibility to ensure that the final version of their article fully conforms to this style guide. Articles that do not comply with the guidelines described below will not be sent out for review.

1.2. Manuscripts must be written using Microsoft Word (preferably in its latest version) or, alternatively, a word processing software compatible with PC.

1.3. Manuscripts must be typed using Times New Roman.  For all special characters that are not available in this font, the author will present, alongside the Word manuscript, a PDF file that includes these characters, and also a document in which these characters are listed and the font used to write them is specified.

1.4. Manuscripts should be submitted via the online submission and tracking system of Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Extremadura at: https://publicaciones.unex.es/index.php/AEF. Authors need to register in the system (capital letters must be avoided), indicating their name, email address, ORCID number, affiliation and postal address. To submit a manuscript, authors must choose one of the following options: «artículos» (articles), «notas y documentos» (notes and documents) y «reseñas» (reviews). In the metadata section, authors will indicate the title of the article, subtitle (if any), abstract (up to 150 words) and keywords (up to six), both in the language of the article and in English. If the article is written in English, all fields will be filled in using English. In the case of book reviews, the title will consist of the name of the author and the title of the book under review, whereas the subtitle will consist of the place and year of publication, as shown in the numbers published. In the abstract section, the author will simply state «Book review». No keywords will be provided.

1.5. Authors are required to use inclusive language that avoids any biases or expressions that discriminate against groups of people based on race, gender, or socioeconomic status. Likewise, authors are required to adhere to the linguistic system.

 

  1. SPECIFIC FEATURES

2.1. Submissions will not exceed 45000 characters (with spaces) in length, including the abstract, all footnotes, references, appendices, etc. Book reviews cannot exceed the maximum of 15000 characters (with spaces) or be shorter than 5000 characters.

2.2. Articles and notes and documents must be anonymized. They will include a title (capital letters, 12 pts, centred), a self-contained abstract in the language of the manuscript with keywords (10 pts), the translation of the title into English and an abstract with keywords in English (10 pts). Upon acceptance, the author will add, below the title, the following information:

Author (small caps, 11 pts, centred) and Affiliation (Roman type, 10 pts, centred).

Book reviews will include the title of the book under review and the following information (12 pts, hanging indentation 1.25 cm.): Author: Title. Place: Publisher, year, number of pages, ISBN number. For example:

Humberto López Morales: La andadura del español por el mundo. Madrid: Taurus, 2010, 464 páginas. ISBN: 978-84-306-0804-1.

2.3. With regard to format, the text will observe the following guidelines:

  1. a) Margins: 2.5 cm. top and bottom margins; 3 cm. left and right margins.
  2. b) All paragraphs will have a 1.25 cm. indentation and will be justified, except for headings. This applies to footnotes too.
  3. c) The size of the font will be 12 points for the text, 11 points for long quotes and references (see section 2.6) and 10 points for footnotes.
  4. d) Manuscripts should be double-spaced, with no lines of space before or after paragraphs. Headings will be set off from the main text by a line of space above (see section 2.4). Footnotes will be single-spaced.

 

2.4. If the article is divided into sections, headings will be used. They must be preceded by Arabic numerals separated by periods. A maximum of three levels (1.1.1) can be used, according to the following model:

  1. a) First level: small capitals
  2. b) Second level: italics
  3. c) Third level: roman

Example:

  1. 1. Introducción

            1.1. Presupuestos teóricos

            1.1.1. Clasificaciones tradicionales

Each heading should be set off from the main text by a line of space above, as previously stated.

2.5. Quotes and examples:

  1. a) Quotes up to three lines will be part of the running text. Quotes longer than three lines will be presented in a different paragraph, using a 11-point font, without quotation marks, with a 2.5 cm. indentation in the first line and a 2 cm. indentation in the rest of the paragraph.

Quotes in a language different from that of the article may be translated. If a translated version of the quote is provided, it should be placed in square brackets using the same format of the quote.

  1. b) Examples may be either part of the running text (italicized; avoid quotation marks) or listed separately. If they are listed separately, they will be presented in a different paragraph, italicized, numbered consecutively (using parenthesis) and using a 2.5 cm indentation. For example:

2.6. Bibliographical references will be incorporated to the text using the Harvard citation style (Author, year: page). For example:

– Según Martínez Celdrán (1994: 176-177), las vibrantes se caracterizan por…

– «Las vibrantes se caracterizan por tener breves oclusiones seguidas de pequeños elementos vocálicos» (Martínez Celdrán, 1994: 176)

All and only the works referenced in the text should be listed, alphabetically [following the system Surname(s) (in small caps), Name(s)], in an unnumbered section entitled «Reference list» (11 pts, hanging indentation 1.25 cm.).

  1. a) Books: Surname(s), Name(s) (year): Title. City: Publisher (edition, if applies).
  2. b) Book chapters: Surname(s), Name(s) (year): «Title». In Surname(s), Name(s) [when a book chapter has more than two authors use et al.]: Book title. City: Publisher, page numbers.
  3. c) Articles: Surname(s), Name(s) (year): «Title». Journal, number (in Arabic numbers; if there is a volume, it will be referred to after the full stop, with no spaces), page numbers.

DOI numbers must be added, in parenthetical form at the end, whenever possible.

2.7. Quotation marks:

  1. a) For in-text citations, journal titles and words used in a technical or ironical sense, Spanish quotation marks will be used (« »). Double quotation marks (“ ”) will be used for quotes within quotes.
  2. b) For translations and semantic indications, single quotation marks (‘ ’) will be used. For example:

– apis lat. ‘bee’

– verbs of ‘motion’

2.8. With regard to abbreviations, both those commonly used (such as ibídem, ídem, art. cit., cf., ej., ob. cit., op. cit., vid., s.v., p. ej., p., pp., ss., etc., fig.)  and those whose meaning has been explained in the text may be employed throughout the manuscript. Only those abbreviations of Latin origin that are not included in Diccionario de la Lengua Española will be italicized, such as those listed in this paragraph.

2.9.  Footnotes will be numbered consecutively using Arabic numbers. Authors must refrain from using footnotes in book reviews.

2.10. If authors want to include tables in their manuscripts, they will be presented in the text using a 11-point font and with no indentation of any kind.

2.11. In general, the use of bold and capital letters must be avoided. Instead, authors may use italics and Small Caps. It should be noted, however, that authors must refrain from emphasizing words in their manuscripts.

2.12. When URLs are provided, they will be presented in parenthetical form, indicating when they were accessed: (online: <https://dle.rae.es>, accessed: 7 May 2020).

2.13. In book reviews, as well as in accepted articles, the name of the author (with their surname in small caps), their affiliation (in italics), email address and ORCID number will be included. This information will be presented aligned to the right.

2.14. The section «Notes and documents» will observe the same guidelines as those for articles, except for the length (see section 2.1). This section is intended to publish reviews, bibliographical reviews, scientific notes, or editions of texts that do not exceed twice the length of articles. The editorial board may include in this section manuscripts originally submitted by authors as articles.
